As the world clamours for equality equal pay in sports amongst men and women, something great is about to happen in Nigeria.
Edo Queens, a side in the Nigerian women’s league will receive same payment as the men, Bendel insurance in the 2019/2019 season. The NWPL side is one of the best packaged sides in the league with good planning and image. They also have a new bus; this is made possible by the Edo State Government.
This was made known by the Deputy Governor of the state, Philip Shuaibu on Tuesday. Recently, the team has received enough support from the state government and will have a logo presentation and rebranding ceremony at the Banquet Hall of the Government House on Wednesday.
The Governor, who played for Bendel Insurance last season in the NPFL said that the state will not discriminate against the women’s team. He said there will be no discrimination between both teams in terms of welfare and and salary. He said the state plans to make Edo Queens the highest paid women’s football club in the country. http://opr.news/s3bdbc469191119en_ng
He then reeled out why both sides should earn equal pay. He highlighted the fact that Edo Queens have never been relegated from the league while Insurance just went on relegation. The male team has not gotten to the semi-final of the FA cup in 12 years while the women’s team have made it to the semi-final for the past four years. The team narrowly missed out on the NWPL Super Four which took place in Lagos with Rivers Angels emerging winners. http://www.bellsnews.com/politics/president-buhari-congratulates-governor-elect-david-lyon-on-his-victory/
It is on record that equal pay in sports is one the most controversial topics in sports, especially football. The American women’s team feel they deserve equal pay because they have won laurels for the country while the men have not, yet the men earn more than them.
